London Borough of Newham – Review of Regeneration

London Borough of Newham – Review of Regeneration

London Borough of Newham

Regenfirst undertook a review of the London Borough of Newham’s Regeneration Service in 2008 when the borough was seeking to exploit the extraordinary regeneration and development opportunities to Stratford and the Royal Docks by the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. We proposed the creation of a new directorate bringing together planning, regeneration and property functions, allowing the Council to use all possible levers to steer development, and mapped out a programme of work running up to the Games. Retained to implement our recommendations, we provided an interim Executive Director to manage the restructure and embedded three highly experienced consultants within the new directorate who worked with existing staff to deliver the work programme, including a major facelift for Stratford town centre in time for the Games, and a Stratford Metropolitan Masterplan to realise the development opportunities post-Games. Partly as a result of our input, Newham was strongly represented in the Olympic legacy planning process and Stratford and the Royal Docks are firmly established as major development zones in London.
